Why is the IP location "wrong"?
If you used ⊕ Use my IP and the city is far from where you actually are — that's expected, not a bug. IP geolocation can never pinpoint a device. The provider only knows where your ISP's gateway is, and one gateway typically serves thousands of customers spread across a region.
Common cases where IP geo is way off:
- Mobile (4G/5G) — your IP is the carrier's nearest packet-data gateway. Vodafone India routes a huge slice of Delhi-NCR through Bahadurgarh/Rewari, so every Vodafone user in the region resolves there.
- VPN / Tor — the IP is the exit node, somewhere completely different from you.
- CGNAT (broadband) — same gateway shared across an entire neighbourhood.

How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP-to-location databases are statistical, not exact. Country is usually right (> 95%). Region/city drops to 50–70% — many residential ISPs route via a single regional gateway. Mobile/CGNAT addresses and VPN exit nodes are routinely "off" by hundreds of kilometres because the routable IP isn't anywhere near the user.
For exact location, use the 📍 Use my GPS (exact) button — the browser's Geolocation API uses GPS, Wi-Fi triangulation, and cell-tower signals and is typically accurate to within a few metres. It requires your permission (browser prompt) and only ever runs locally.
Never use IP location for anything safety-critical (e.g. blocking, fraud decisions) without a secondary signal. It's good enough for currency selection, localised content, and analytics — and unreliable for everything else.
